How many grams of food does a rabbit eat per day
An adult rabbit of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) eats about 262 g (9.2 oz) of food a day: 106 g (3.7 oz) of hay (Merck Veterinary Manual, Management of Laboratory Animals (Dec 2025), 2026-09-19), 69 g (2.4 oz) of pellets (Merck Veterinary Manual, Diet for Rabbits (reviewed Jul 2026), 2026-09-19) and 86 g (3.0 oz) of leafy greens (House Rabbit Society, Diet (undated), 2026-09-19). The grams scale with body weight, so a small breed eats far less and a giant far more; a young rabbit gets about 138 g (4.9 oz) of pellets at the same weight. The tables below give hay, pellets and greens in grams for rabbits of 1 kg to 5 kg, adult and young, and what that comes to per month in bags.

Grams of hay, pellets and greens per day, by body weight
One rabbit. Hay 42.5 g per kg, adult pellets 27.6 g per kg, young pellets 55.2 g per kg, leafy greens 34.5 g per kg, each times the body weight. The total is for an adult; a young rabbit adds the extra pellets.

Rabbit food chart by age
- Adult (over 6 months): Merck Veterinary Manual: about 1/4 cup of pellets per 5 lb a day (27.6 g per kg) with unlimited hay and greens; follow your bag's guide
- Young (under 6 months): House Rabbit Society: alfalfa pellets to 7 months, then about twice the adult ration; 55.2 g per kg used
The pellet ration is the only line that changes with age (House Rabbit Society, Diet (undated), 2026-09-19): alfalfa pellets freely to 7 months, then about twice the adult amount to a year, and the adult amount after. Hay is unlimited at every age, alfalfa for the young and grass hay (timothy, meadow) for adults; greens are introduced gradually from about 12 weeks.
Hay and pellets per month, and bags, for 1 to 4 rabbits
Adult rabbits at the calculator’s starting values. Per month is 30.44 days; bags are exact first, then rounded up to what you buy; “one bag lasts” is the bag weight divided by what the group gets through in a day.

Where the grams come from
No publisher gives a rabbit’s food in grams for every weight; the guides work in cups, bundles and shares of the diet. The figures here combine them: hay from the share of body weight animals eat a day and the share of a rabbit’s diet that is hay (Merck Veterinary Manual, Management of Laboratory Animals (Dec 2025), 2026-09-19); pellets from the published quarter cup per 5 lb and a published cup-to-gram equivalence (Merck Veterinary Manual, Diet for Rabbits (reviewed Jul 2026), 2026-09-19); greens from the published 2 cups per 6 lb and the weight of a cup of shredded romaine (House Rabbit Society, Diet (undated), 2026-09-19). Pellets and greens are heavier or lighter per cup depending on the brand and the vegetable, so treat the grams as a planning figure and follow the guide on your bag.
Weight matters more than breed: a 1 kg Netherland Dwarf and a 5 kg Flemish Giant sit at opposite ends of the table. Weigh your rabbit on kitchen scales and use that figure.
Work it out for your own rabbits
The rabbit food calculator takes your rabbits, their weight and age and the bags you buy, and gives hay, pellets and greens per day and per month, bags per month, how long a bag lasts and the cost from your own prices, in g and kg or oz and lb. Guinea pigs eat differently (more vegetables, vitamin C, far less pellet): see how much food a guinea pig should have or the guinea pig food calculator.
Amounts are published averages for planning, not veterinary advice; a vet decides what an individual animal needs, and a rabbit that stops eating for a day needs one the same day.
Frequently asked questions
- How many grams of food does a 2 kg rabbit eat per day?
- About 209 g (7.4 oz) a day: 85 g (3.0 oz) of hay, 55 g (1.9 oz) of pellets and 69 g (2.4 oz) of leafy greens for an adult of 2 kg (4.4 lb). Hay is unlimited in practice; the gram figure is what a rabbit of that weight typically gets through, for the shopping list.
- How many grams of hay should a rabbit eat a day?
- About 42.5 g per kg of rabbit: 106 g (3.7 oz) for a 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) rabbit (Merck Veterinary Manual, Management of Laboratory Animals (Dec 2025), 2026-09-19). Hay is unlimited and most of the diet, at least a bundle the size of the rabbit every day; the grams are for buying it, not for rationing it.
- How many grams of pellets does a rabbit need per day?
- About 27.6 g per kg for an adult on unlimited hay: 69 g (2.4 oz) for a 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) rabbit (Merck Veterinary Manual, Diet for Rabbits (reviewed Jul 2026), 2026-09-19). That is the published quarter cup per 5 lb; pellet weight per cup differs by brand, so follow the guide on your bag.
- Do young rabbits eat more than adults?
- Yes, in pellets: a rabbit under 6 months gets about 55.2 g per kg, 138 g (4.9 oz) at 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) against 69 g (2.4 oz) for an adult (House Rabbit Society, Diet (undated), 2026-09-19), and alfalfa hay and pellets rather than timothy until about a year. Hay stays unlimited.
- How many grams of vegetables does a rabbit eat a day?
- About 34.5 g per kg of leafy greens: 86 g (3.0 oz) for a 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) rabbit, from the published minimum of 2 cups of chopped greens per 6 lb (House Rabbit Society, Diet (undated), 2026-09-19). Leafy greens, not root vegetables or fruit, which are treats.
- How long does a 1 kg bag of hay last a rabbit?
- About 9 days for one adult rabbit of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) and 5 days for two, at 106 g (3.7 oz) each a day; a 2.5 lb bag lasts 11 days for one. Larger rabbits and wasteful eaters empty it faster.
